A tour organized in association with local clubs around the coasts of France and
Spain to promote junior surfing, the Block Series hit Zarautz on June 22 after Sopelana
and Hossegor, for another special moment for all surfer kids and families.
Zarautz, a classy little beach side resort on Iberia's NE coast considered the Basque
Country's very own hotbed of talent, enjoyed a groovy competition all day on the
famous sands, with glassy one-meter peaks offering the youth a chance to shine.
And shine on they did, like crazy diamonds! The round-robin format featured no
instant elimination, offering all comers at least two heats to surf in, and as the tide
filled-in up the Zarautz sandbar, performance went from rad to « mucho » rad!
The Nike Block Series isn't all about out-performing the neighbour, it's also about
spreading the irie vibes, with free entry, free food, and wicked prize packs going
down a storm with the Basque youth.
One local grom, known only as 'Txema' wasn't all about glory, saving his love purely
for the comp set-up itself. "Yeah it's so cool," chimed the wee lad. "I'm really stoked
they put chairs out so we all had somewhere nice to sit...'
But amidst of the fun and camaraderie, there was a contest on too, and it was
Maddi Aizpurua, Iker Amatrian and Nikolas Illaramendi who took top honors
respectively in the Super Groms (Under 12), Groms (Under 16) and Junior (Under 20)
divisions. All grabbing their precious qualifying ticket for the Block Series Final
scheduled late August.
With only two events and six coveted spots remaining for the grand finale, the Nike
Block Series will meet with Biarritz (France) locals on June 23 and Somo (Spain) locals
in early July, the Somo event forced to be delayed due to inconsistent surf.
