PRESENTED BY WILLIAM REED
Whatever dissonance that must exist when an American pop-rock outfit of 80s tastes names itself for a book of essays on anarchism seems to only enhance Two Cheers’ irrepressibly buoyant tunes. Singer Bryan Akcasu explains: “The band gets into a room, taps out a beat, and plays to the mood without any rules imposed. Just as with any anarchic situation, the rules arise organically. We find each other’s wavelength, lock in, and just enjoy it. That’s when the song is really born; the rest of the process is about remaining true to that moment, to that initial spark.” The lyrics come later, though Akcasu finds them through similar means. “Thoughts, stories, and images are rushing through my mind all the time. When I listen to our music, I kind of just divert the stream and start writing.”
Guitarist Mitchell Dill is no stranger to the creative process, having earned his undergraduate degree in creative writing. “We’ll pick a beat, pick up a guitar or a bass, pick some good noises and play them at each other,” he says. “Maybe five or six minutes in and we’ve unearthed—if not a song’s full skeleton—some very handsome bones for a new tune. We work with lots of single-note spy guitar licks, weaving them in and around each other until the best version of it all fights its way to the top.” With a predilection for modern styles, Dill encourages the group’s more experimental tendencies. He also brings levity to the grueling self-production process. “We’re at the point in the process now where we listen to the mix, silently reflect, and then declare in unison: ‘Still not enough reverb.’”
