The Dirty 9's formed officially in January 2005 in Cian's kitchen in Maynooth. Although the three founding members (Fergal, Stephen and Cian) all went to school together they had rarely spoken to one another and never even thought about playing music together. By chance they all went to the same University N.U.I Maynooth in 2004. One night Cian saw Fergal playing at an Open Mic in the Student Union. "To be honest his songs didnt even register with me they werent my thing, but the way he got up on to the stage was impressive, he looked like he knew what he was doing," Cian August 2005. "All I knew about Cian was that he was a bit of a smart arse who could play a few blues licks," Fergal August 2005. Despite not knowing each other so well they agreed to meet up to write songs. Immediatly things changed: "All of the songs I had written before I met Fergal were awful", Cian September 2005. "Yeah there was definitely more of an urgency in the songs when myself and Cian began to write as opposed to what I d done beforehand", Fergal October 2005. Inspired by this the two went to live in Galway in the summer of 2004 to busk for a living. They managed to survive the summer and at one stage Stephen Dunne came to visit. "Cian had been promising me guitar lessons, but it never happened! In the end I went to visit the lads in Galway, I thought they could do with someone who actually had rhythm so I offered my services on bass," Stephen September 2005. By January 2005 the lads had got their songs together and were ready to do battle. Michael Kearns was brought in on Drums and gigs in the Sugar Club, Eamon Dorans and the Maynooth Student Union followed. A hight point was getting to play support to the Republic of Loose at the Maynooth Student Union in March 2006. "It was great we were the battle of the band champions and that was the prize, the best thing was that more people there seemed to know who we were!" Cian May 2006. In April of this year the band recorded the songs you can hear here in 147 studios in the Factory, with a superb fellow by the name of Tristan. From that they got an excellent review from Jackie Hayden in Hotpress, he called them "a band made for these times" Hotpress May 17th 2006. Since then Michael Kearns has left and been replaced by Tippeary man David Blackett. Since the summer the Dirty 9s have stepped up the amount of gigs they play. In the last few months they have played numerous gigs in The Temple Bar Music Centre, Sugar Club, Pravda, Toners of Baggot Street, and further afield in The UCC student Bar. They have also managed to make radio appearances on Late Night Chat on 98fm and The Soup on Anna Livia Fm. Now its back to the studio for awhile "We have a lot of songs I just want to get out there as quickly as possible, its always been important to us to show that we do actually have the songs to back up what we say, unlike lots of other bands who just talk themselves up the whole time when they really shouldn't," Fergal June 2006. The future looks bright for these lads who have come a long way from playing in each others kitchens. Long may the music continue..
