PRESENTED BY PAULINE FREEMAN
What would you get if you crossed influences like The Beatles, The Stone Roses and Paul Weller with a little solo twist? The answer comrades, is 24 year old Rob Smith. Rob Smith who was born in the heart of Dublin City, Ireland in 1982 grew up with one thing in mind. He wanted to be a rock 'n' roll musician. Totally mesmerised by the likes of John Lennon and co. he knew his first love in life was always going to be music. Rob was once a drummer in mid-nineties Beatles influenced quintet The Gears but after the band called it a day in 2000, Rob decided it was the right time to go it alone and do it himself for himself. After spending time travelling and writing the songs that would become the songs on his widely acknowledged and much sought after demo - "The Soul Shaker L.P.". This CD has attracted the attention and praise of people such as Christy Dignam (Aslan), Brendan Hickey (On The Verge.ie), Mark Coyle (Oasis producer), Aidan Lonergan (The Soup), Ray Shah (Q102/City Channel), Digsy (Currently in Liverpool band The Sums and he of Oasis Digsys Dinner fame) to name but a few. Rob has appeared in some of the most prestigious venues and at events across the country such as Vicar Street, Olympia Theatre, Witnness Festival, Whelans, The Village, Sky Venue Portlaoise, Castlebar Royal Theatre, Limelight Belfast, Dolans Limerick, Music Factory Carlow and so on. He has also appeared in UK venues such as Glasgow Garage and also a memorable sell out-show in Liverpools Cavern Club. As well as all that, Rob Smith has "wowed" the crowds at his own shows. One radio DJ said seeing a Rob Smith gig was like seeing "the entertainment of Jerry Fish with the musicianship of Paul Weller". He is renowned for solo & acoustic shows which although sounds boring, anyone who has ever said they were bored at a Rob Smith gig, obviously has never been to one!
