Singer songwriter Holly Macve signed to the Bella Union label late last year, catching the ear of John Grant, Mercury Prize winner Benjamin Clementine and Mercury Rev who all invited her on tour with them after hearing a single demo. Appearances at Iceland Airwaves, Paris shows with Yael Naim and a gig with Josh T Pearson at the High & Lonesome festival closed out 2015. She is now embarking on a UK tour with Villagers, followed by her North American debut at the SXSW Music Festival. She will then hit the road with Mothers.
To celebrate, Holly has recorded a wonderfully poignant song called ‘We Don’t Know Where We’re Going’ originally released by Melanie Safka in 1972 on her LP Garden In The City. This track was recorded recently in a Sussex studio by Chris Blakey taking a brief time out from engineering new music with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. Before the Villagers dates next month, Holly is finishing off the debut album for Bella Union in the North East with Paul Gregory.
Holly Macve was born 20 years ago in Ireland and was brought up in Yorkshire. She is now based in Brighton, where Bella Union label boss Simon Raymonde came across her at an open mic show in 2015. He states, “I had a tip-off to go to a basement bar where she was playing. In a room full of beery boys chatting across all the music beforehand, the minute Holly opened her mouth the room fell silent. Hers is a rare gift.”
She has been writing and recording with the likes of Bill Ryder-Jones and Paul Gregory from Lanterns On The Lake.
