Ash Mountains, the five-song debut from Edmonton's Cayley
Thomas, towers far above its runtime. Its trenchant, glowing
melodies come from a classically trained voice; its lyrics from a
sharp mind tempered beyond her 22 years. This emerging singer-
songwriter has been studying and performing music for more than a decade. She's at home singing the blues of long winter nights, the jazz of orange prairie mornings and the folk of everyday life.
Recorded at Sound Extractor Studio in Edmonton, Ash Mountains
explores the tension between past and present. From the opening
guitar line of "Guilty" through to the tranquil longing of the closing song "Blue Summer," the tone is established but kept adventurous. There are many paths that lead out from what Thomas presents here and she seems capable of traveling down any of them with flourish and poise. There is, however, a definite sense of longing to this record. The EP was written after the loss of Cayley's brother Alex, to whom Ash Mountains is dedicated. But we also hear the resilience of a vibrant new voice just starting to realize what it's capable of. The EP was released at the end of August, just weeks after Thomas performed on the main stage at the 2013 Edmonton Folk Music Festival. She played for an audience of 20, 000 people in between performances by Charles Bradley and Leslie Feist. Shortly after the festival the album reached #4 on the CKUA charts. This spring Thomas will take Ash Mountains on the road.
