PRESENTED BY CASSIE WALKER
A music and movement collective that is in equal measures nostalgic and innovative, Arbori delivers folk storytelling through jazz-inspired melodies, like a favourite grandparent who won't shut up. Having shared the stage with the likes of Matt Corby, Stu Larsen, the Falls, and Patrick James, as well as collaborating with a number of award-winning dance acts, Arbori has been noted as "one of Sydney's most exciting young bands" (Timber and Steel) and "what the Australian music scene is missing" (The Ripe).Lead man Steven Barnard weaves together his songwriting and choreography into a beautifully surprising experience.
"A sweet, fragile slice of Australian folk." Dom Alessio, Triple J
"In the Places You Fold is absolutely beautiful"Emma Swift, In the Pines, FBI Radio
"Listened to Polar Bear Swim 10 times. I'm Super Impressed."Elize Strydom, Triple J
Being compared to "the finer moments of Wilco, Sufjan Stevens and Broken Social Scene" (The Ripe) and said to be "channeling the likes of Simon & Garfunkel with a modern twist" (The Au, Review), Arbori holds a grand affection for transportive instrumentals combined with pop sensibilities.
As a dancer Steve has performed and assisted contemporary choreographer Sarah Boulter (So You Think You Can Dance AU and UK) and represented his state and country with the acclaimed hip-hop outfit Phly Crew. Through Arbori, Steve is developing a movement aesthetic that is enchanting some of the world's best choreographers:
"Wowza. You are LOVELY. The songs. The movement. Just lovely. And strange. And lovely. "Polar Bear Swim" is exquisite."Erica Sobol, Dancer Choreographer USA
"You could sense the potential movement throughout each key change or progression. An authentic delight." Chloe Webb, The Au, Review
Known for audacious recording projects involving large bands in live environments, the success of singles Biology Of Memories (2010), In the Places You Fold (2012), and dance film Polar Bear Swim (May 2013) have set Arbori on a trajectory to become one of Australia's most engaging and emotive new acts, both live and on record.
Look out for Flannelette and Feather Beds (Run in the Rain), Arbori's forthcoming single and dance film in October 2013.
