Computer sales fell by 10% from 2012 to 2013 and this does not seem to be a mere blip but more the start of a trend that is set to continue. Market saturation and, in particular, increased competition from substitute devices such as tablets or mobile phones are putting downward pressure on demand. Even emerging markets, with their healthy demographic growth, increasing wealth and growing Internet access cannot provide the demand required to make the industry grow. Sales on emerging markets, which currently make up no less than half of global sales, are set to drop by over 5% from 2013 to 2018.
